India’s iconic motorcycle manufacturer, Royal Enfield, is set to enter the 250cc segment for the first time. However, the most significant aspect of this move is that instead of developing its own engine, the company is entering into a strategic technology partnership with China’s CFMoto. Through this project, Royal Enfield is not only launching a new motorcycle but also taking a crucial step toward future eco-friendly technologies.

According to an exclusive report by
AutoCar India, Royal Enfield is planning to source a state-of-the-art engine from CFMoto for its upcoming 250cc motorcycle, which will be developed under the company’s new “V” platform. Notably, this engine is designed to be compatible with future hybrid conversion.
The new 250cc engine will feature a single-cylinder, liquid-cooled configuration and will comply with India’s latest BS-VI Phase 2 emission norms. AutoCar India further reports that a completely new platform, codenamed “V”, is being developed based on this engine.
Key features of the engine include:
● 250cc capacity, capable of producing 26–28 bhp of power
● A potential fuel efficiency of 40–45 km/l
● Compliance with CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) regulations
● A design that is convertible to mild or full hybrid in the future
This engine is essentially based on the CFMoto 250NK model, which has already been performing successfully in international markets.
This partnership is not a joint venture, but rather an engine licensing and technology exchange agreement. CFMoto will supply only the engine, while Royal Enfield will independently handle the following aspects of the motorcycle:
● Chassis design
● Suspension setup
● Electrical and electronic components
● Styling and branding
As a result, the final motorcycle will retain the distinctive Royal Enfield look and feel, while being powered by a world-class, performance-focused engine at its core.
This marks a major shift for Royal Enfield, which has traditionally focused on classic motorcycles with relatively larger engine displacements. However, India’s increasingly stringent fuel efficiency regulations (CAFÉ norms) and environmental mandates are pushing the company toward more fuel-efficient and tech-driven motorcycles.
The engine of this 250cc motorcycle will be “hybrid-ready,” meaning it can be equipped in the future with:
● Battery assist
● Regenerative braking
● Start-stop system
● Electric mode for low-speed riding.
This technology will be highly effective for urban commuting in countries like India, especially in traffic-heavy areas. The upcoming Royal Enfield motorcycle will face competition from:
● TVS Apache RTR 200 4V
● Bajaj Pulsar N250
● Yamaha FZ25
● Suzuki Gixxer 250
● Honda Hornet 2.0
However, Royal Enfield’s bike will stand out due to its distinctive design, strong brand value, and the potential inclusion of hybrid features.
