Motorbike registration suspended

The government on Tuesday ordered the authorities concerned to suspend registration of motorbikes for one month in Dhaka with effect from today in a move to restore discipline in the city traffic system.

The number of unregistered motorbikes is double or may be triple the number of registered ones…We will conduct a survey to assess the actual situation as such chaos cannot go on, communications minister Obaidul Quader told a press briefing after a meeting that discussed ways to ease traffic in the city before Ramadan beginning next month.

He said the number of registered motorcycles was already 2.77 lakh in Dhaka while many more bikes entered the city from outside contributing to the traffic congestions every day.
The survey on motorbikes would continue for one month, he added.
It is very sad that motorbike riders do not care about traffic rules and even occupy footpaths causing inconveniences to pedestrians, the minister said.
He said the number of motorcycles having no fitness papers was 1.14 lakh in the capital as per official records.

We have already sent a list of the unfit vehicles to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Mobile caourts would start operating soon to dump unfit vehicles, the minister said.
The government will take some serious decisions soon to streamline the city’s transport system, Obaidul Quader said.

We will sit with the transport owners and workers next week so that we can give city people some respite from traffic congestion in the month of Ramadan.

He said that despite being a modern city, Dhaka did not have adequate number of taxicabs.

We have initiated a move to introduce more taxicabs in the city. Eight companies have responded to an advertisement for importing taxicabs as we have relaxed conditions. The eligible company would get the clearance by June 30 for import of the taxicabs, he said.
